Edwards plans MLK speech - on Hillary's turf
By Kenneth R. Bazinet
New York Daily News Washington Bureau
Originally published on January 12, 2007
WASHINGTON - Former veep nominee John Edwards will make an "in-your-face-Hillary" visit Sunday when he delivers a Martin Luther King holiday sermon at a Harlem church.
The Iraq war will be the Democratic presidential candidate's topic for his "Realizing the Dream" MLK talk at the Riverside Church, a source said.
While Edwards is not likely to mention Sen. Hillary Clinton by name, his remarks will leave no doubt he has the New York senator in mind when he criticizes the war.
"It's about Iraq and the need for people in Congress to engage on the
issue," the source said. "He'll push for an up-or-down vote on the war."
Dear friend:
You amaze and inspire me.
You - together with 4,400 other Americans - have grown One Corps into 760 chapters in all 50 states in less than two weeks.
People like you are signing up to join with friends and neighbors to take responsibility for our country through action in our local communities. Everywhere I go, people are telling me they don't want to wait until the next election to change America - they're ready to take action today. That's what One Corps is all about.
As you know, our first National Day of Action is Saturday, January 27. Earlier this week, we asked you for your feedback and ideas on the first Day of Action. We heard some great ideas on the blog and by email about actions each of us can take to address the critical challenges facing America - and in the coming months we'll have Days of Action on health care, poverty, and other issues you raised.
But I want you to be the first to know that for this first Day of Action, I'm asking all One Corps chapters to get together and take action to help conserve energy and fight global warming.
When I announced my candidacy last month, I said that our country must break its addiction to oil and create a new energy economy. I also said that global warming is a huge moral issue for America and the entire world. These are tremendous challenges, which won't be solved in a day - but each of us can take responsibility in small ways that make a big difference.
For example, after years of driving a regular SUV, Elizabeth and I just purchased a Ford Escape hybrid. I'm not asking each of you to buy a new car, however, or fight this problem on your own. We can all work together in our local communities - educating others and changing the way we use energy in our homes and workplaces - to bring about the change we need today.
George Stern, our National One Corps Director, will follow up shortly with details about how you can get started to make our National Day of Energy Action a success, and specific actions that you can take in your home and life to conserve energy now.
We all know that government or technological innovation alone will not solve global warming or increase energy efficiency. To solve these problems, we need to ask Americans to be patriotic about something other than war.
Today, I'm asking you to be patriotic - to make a difference in how you and your community use energy, and to get the word out and ask others to join you on January 27th.
Thank you for taking action.
Your friend,
John
Tonight, President Bush is expected to adopt the McCain Doctrine and announce his plan to send up to 20,000 more troops to Iraq. That is a grave mistake.
The president's decision is wrong for Iraq and wrong for America -- and it's time for the new Congress to stop Bush from stubbornly pursuing his failed strategy in Iraq.
Congress should make it clear to the president that he will not get any money to put more of our troops in harm's way until he provides a plan to turn responsibility of Iraq over to the Iraqi people and to ultimately leave Iraq.
The situation in Iraq demands a political solution -- not an escalation of the war that our generals agree won't help.
Escalating the war in Iraq sends the wrong message to the Iraqi people, to the region, and the world.
To get the Iraqis to begin to take responsibility for their country, we must show them that we are serious about leaving. And the best way to do that is by actually starting to leave -- beginning by immediately withdrawing 40,000-50,000 of our troops, not escalating the war.
George Bush wants to dig a deeper hole, but we need to climb out:
Join me in calling on Congress to block funding for Bush's escalation in Iraq.
Only when the U.S. starts leaving will the Iraqi people and other regional powers be forced to step up and engage in the search for a political solution -- and bring an end to the sectarian violence.
This president has had nearly four years to get Iraq right -- and at every step, he's gotten it wrong. Tonight, he's more wrong than ever about what America needs to do. It's time for Congress to act. And it's time for America to begin leaving Iraq.
Tell Congress to stop Bush's escalation of the war.
Thank you for taking action,
John Edwards
P.S. Please forward this email on to everyone you know -- Congress needs to hear from all of us that the American people are opposed to escalating the war in Iraq.
Dear friends:
The response to Senator Edwards' announcement last week was incredible.
Everywhere we went, high-energy crowds of thousands turned out to hear John talk about building one America, where everyone has the opportunity to succeed -- starting with guaranteeing universal health care, ending poverty in thirty years, creating a new energy economy, and restoring America's moral leadership in the world. Online, more than a hundred thousand people have participated in virtual town halls and watched the New Orleans launch. We're off to a great start.
But we need your help to keep the momentum going and get the word out to millions more. This campaign is about all of us, about our dreams for a better country and our commitment to making it happen. The best way to spread the word and build our momentum is for people in your area -- and around the nation -- to hear from you: what does your dream for America look like, and why do you support John Edwards' campaign for change?
- Click here to write a letter to the editor of a paper near you -- and share your story about why you personally support our campaign to change America.
- Click here to upload your story of support to YouTube.
We have all the tools you'll need to write and submit your letter online -- or to upload your own video to YouTube -- and it only takes a few minutes.
Why is sharing your story of support important? Because people in your community and the media in Washington need to know that Americans really care about ending poverty and strengthening the middle class, about universal health care, global warming and restoring our moral authority in the world.
The cynics don't believe it. After so many years of watching Washington cater to powerful interests and big corporations, they don't think the American people have the power to fundamentally change our country.
But we know better. We heard from thousands of Americans last week about our need to work together to change America.
Writing your story of support in a letter to the editor or explaining it in a video on YouTube is the perfect way to tell the world why you're ready to take action to change America. It only takes a few minutes to record a short video or write a short letter to the editor.
Please share your story today.
Thank you for taking action.
